An Eckville farmer has been disqualified from challenging to replace Alberta’s government House Leader and Environment Minister Jason Nixon in the Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre riding.
Tim Hoven said he was running against Nixon because of hearing from people in the constituency that people wanted change.
“There were hundreds of people who have had phone calls and emails ignored, and that is not how an MLA is supposed to represent the people of this constituency.”
“The number one concern the UCP had was that I had signed up for an account at a website back in 2015, Gab.com, and on that website there was a list of people to follow on the website, and that was in the height of pro-Trump, anti-Hillary days” explained Hoven. “Now, over the past four years, a lot of those pro-Trump people were branded by the internet as being white nationalists.”
Hoven says that because of that inactive social media account, one he claims he did not use, the UCP claimed he was not able to represent the people of Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre.
Hoven would go on to appeal his disqualification on Mar. 11, but heard back on Mar. 15 that he had been officially disqualified and would not be in the running for MLA.
Rewind Radio reached out to the UCP for comment on Hoven’s disqualification but no response was given.
Hoven says his next steps include contacting the hundreds of people he says supported him me and getting them to buy a ticket to Jason Kenney’s leadership review vote being held in Red Deer Apr. 9.
“People have to stand up. When I was attacked and had my name publicly dragged through the dirt, it wasn’t just a statement about me, it was a statement about anyone who was not part of Jason Kenny’s cabinet,” said Hoven. “It was a message for anyone that if they stand-up and stick their neck out, just expect to get it knocked down because that isn’t allowed in Jason Kenny’s Alberta.”
Hoven said he is a big believer in the democratic process and also believes the solution to problems in a democracy is to have more democracy, not less. Hoven invites people to learn more about the political process, learn more about the people who are representing you, and to stand up and get involved.
