Councils for the Town of Rocky Mountain House and Clearwater County are celebrating the new name of the Rocky Regional Recreation Centre (formerly called the Christensen Sports & Wellness Centre).
Town officials say “Rocky Regional Recreation Centre” was chosen to reflect the realities of geography, municipal collaboration and the many area residents who access the facility every day.
“We are proud of the community collaboration that has built this centre through the years,” said Rocky Mayor Debbie Baich. “This is more than a hockey rink; it is a hub of the entire region and its new name captures that.”
The logos for the Town of Rocky Mountain House and Clearwater County have been installed above the main entrances to the facility.
“All residents of both the Town and Clearwater County can feel at home here,” said County Reeve Daryl Lougheed. “This facility was built in 2016, and since then has attracted many regional hockey and figure skating teams, curling competitions, and community members.”
Clearwater County is involved in recreation-related planning and recommendations through the Recreation District Agreement. The annual operating deficit of recreational facilities and programs including the Rocky Regional Recreation Centre is shared equally between the Town of Rocky Mountain House and Clearwater County.
The town acknowledges the Rocky Regional Recreation Centre is built on Treaty 6 Territory, which is a traditional home and meeting ground for many indigenous people including the Blackfoot, Cree, Saulteaux, Stoney and Métis.
The centre boasts two ice surfaces, a fitness centre, studio, and multi-purpose meeting rooms. It is also home to The Rocky Curling Club, the Extra End Lounge and the Arts and Crafts Guild. The naming sponsorship agreement with Christenson Homes was formally terminated on November 4, 2021.
