A Rocky Mountain House resident is offering his land in hopes that a four court pickleball facility will be built.
Brent Kennedy attended the June 7, 2022 council meeting and presented a proposal and draft agreement to build a pickleball court facility on land that he currently owns. The proposal would involve the subdivision and rezoning of the lots identified for this project. Town administration has been working with Kennedy to ensure all the proper documentation and processes are in place to possibly move forward with the project if council gives its approval.
Administration was asked to identify what the ongoing maintenance costs would be for the facility once the courts are turned over to the Town.
Town officials say, weekly, monthly and annual maintenance would include garbage pickup, outhouse cleaning & monitoring, maintaining the windbreak netting, netting setup and take down, court washing and grass maintenance. It is estimated these functions can be managed within the existing staffing compliment and would cost approximately $4,000 per year. There would be rental costs for a washroom facility of $1,000 and materials and supplies of $200. Annually, it would cost $5,200 per year with $4,000 already being included in the budget as staff time.
Future maintenance and overhead costs would be replacement of the windbreak every seven to 10 years, netting replacement – $200 every five to seven years, line painting – $580 every 10 to 15 years and crack sealing, resurfacing and repainting lines every 15 to 20 years for $25,000 to $30,000, note town officials.
In the closing portion of the meeting between Kennedy and council, the final consideration needed is if council is comfortable with preparatory work that could proceed such as development permits and land subdivision prior to complete finalization of the contract. That will help speed up the process so Kennedy can proceed with construction this year as opposed to waiting until the contract agreement is finalized, say Town officials.
Kennedy says he would like to move forward in a timely manner in order to construct the facility by late summer and be in play for the fall. Administration is working with Kennedy to update the agreement for the development of new pickleball courts.
