The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit has been called in to assist with investigating a death on the Sunchild First Nation on Friday.

On June 16, 2023, at 5:40 a.m., Rocky Mountain House RCMP received a report of a disturbance at a residence on Sunchild First Nation. Upon arrival, officers observed an individual brandishing a firearm.

Mounties say the male and two women retreated into the home after a brief interaction with officers. Officers then called the Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team to assist. Attempts were made to contact the occupants.

At approximately 8:51 a.m., police say a single gunshot could be heard in the home and the two women exited. Upon entering, officers located a deceased individual with an apparent gunshot wound.

The deceased has been identified as a 27-year-old male of no fixed address.

RCMP say the deceased will be taken to the office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
