The provincial government says the 2024 Alberta budget has earmarked over 1.9 billion for road and bridge improvements in the province.
Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors Devin Dreeshen says $3.3 billion has been given to his ministry in this year’s budget, which was passed in the legislature Thursday. “That $3.3 billion number is pretty significant, in a lot of ways” says Dreeshen “There’s over 100 capital projects and highway upgrades throughout the province and they’re all designed to improve safety, to decrease travel time, and to keep pace of our population and investment growth.”
Some of the highlighted projects receiving provincial dollars are:
- Highway 3 twinning, Taber to Burdett
- Highway 11 twinning, Sylvan Lake to Rocky Mountain House
- Safety and road improvements on Highway 881
- The Highway 22/1A interchange at Cochrane
- Highway 40 Twinning, south of Grande Prairie
- Highway 201 Bow River Bridge on southeast Stoney Trail
- Deerfoot Trail upgrades
- Terwillegar Drive Expansion in Edmonton
Dreeshen also noted there are 56 infrastructure projects this year that are getting invested into for the future. These engineering projects are getting $151.2 million over three years, and 36 projects will get $100 million in new funding over three years.
