Daisy Smallboy, a grade 12 student at St. Dominic Catholic High School, has organized an Indigenous gathering and celebration on May 10, to which students from West Central High School and Pioneer Middle School are also invited.
Organizer Shannon Mah characterizes Smallboy as a visionary leader whose dream was to see such an event come to fruition.
“She did the work. She went out to the community and invited them to not only help support her vision, but she also wanted them to participate,” says Mah. “We’re pretty proud of her because she put so much work into this. All we did was just give her a hand.”
As per Smallboy’s vision, the event will feature a celebration of Indigenous culture including powwow dancers and Métis jiggers with a host explaining to the audience the meaning behind the dances.
Along with an expected student body audience around 900 from St. Dominic Catholic High School, West Central High School and Pioneer Middle School, Mah adds that the event is open to the public.
Following the performances, everyone is invited to a free BBQ lunch with supplies and volunteers provided by local businesses.
With fair weather expected, organizers are planning to hold the event outdoors near St. Dom’s (5502 50 Street).
The event will run from around 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
