Clearwater County has set aside funds to begin developing the plan for a community feature green space in the heart of Leslieville.
Officials say $200,000 dollars has been set aside in the 2024 budget for the project. What it will eventually look like, however, is yet to be determined.
“So far, plans are for a small children’s playground,” says Michelle Swanson, Reeve of Clearwater County. “It’s for people who want to come to the retail spaces, and let the kids play while grandma and grandpa watch them.”
Another green space area is being developed on the east end of the community near David Thompson High School, but Swanson adds there was a desire to have another one closer to residents’ homes.
Swanson says the development plan was given the go-ahead by council following an Area Structure Plan (ASP) for Leslieville done by the County and a public engagement session with local residents and a small advisory group.
“Council noticed that maybe the community had said there wasn’t enough green space in the downtown of the Hamlet of Leslieville,” says Swanson.
Council then purchased empty lots with the express purpose of redeveloping them into a community gathering space.
Swanson says there will be an opportunity either late summer or early fall for community members to have their say on what they’d like to see at the space.
