Rocky Mountain House will be the setting as members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) will be hosting a gathering.
The town-hall meeting will be held in Rocky Mountain House on Monday, June 24.
Darren Graham, AUPE vice president, says issues such as wages, job security and government privatization will be among topics discussed.
“Most of the sectors over the past 10 years have taken minimal to no wage increases at all,” says Graham. “With inflation that we continue to see, what’s being proposed by the government right now is not nearly enough to make ends meet for these folks that are currently working.”
Graham adds around 10 per cent of the working population in the Rocky area are union members, a number comparable to other similar-sized communities. Graham says an exception is Athabasca, where the local university has a large contingent of AUPE members.
“We are that thread of stability throughout the community,” says Graham. “We have firefighters, support and nursing staff at the hospital, staff at the Good Samaritan Society in Rocky, all the folks who work at the provincial building, there’s quite a few AUPE members in the Rocky area.”
More than 50 Time for Action town hall meetings are being held across the province, say organizers, including in Cardson, Ponoka and Fairview before the end of June.
The meeting will be held at the Canalta Hotel (4406 41 Avenue, Rocky Mountain House) from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
“I know we’re competing with game seven tonight, but I will be updating the score during the meeting, then hopefully we can catch the last period. Go Oilers Go.” says Graham.
