Thunderclouds were fast approaching the Beaver Flats Road east of Rocky Mountain House on Aug. 27, 2024 around 5 p.m.
A location on the road near the corner of Hwy. 598 is one of the 70 some sites that members of the Rocky Agricultural Society have marked out or plan to mark out with historic school marker sigs.
Starting spring 2024, members have been visiting every corner of Clearwater County putting up the special metal signs at confirmed school sites such as Gaetz in the south, Alhambra in the east, and Gimlet in the north.
According to the Rocky Mountain House Agricultural Society website, the Beaver Flat school was first opened in 1909 as a log cabin-type structure.

It later burned to the ground in 1920, but was replaced by another building on the same site.
The school operated until 1954 when students began being bussed to Rocky Mountain House.
The building was then used as a community centre until it was sold and moved to Leslieville in 1960 where it was used by a Boy Scout hall.
Case Korver, committee member of the Rocky Mountain House Agricultural Society says now is the time to preserve this history.
“The ones who originally attended those country schools are now in the 60 to 70-plus age range,” says Korver. “A lot of the information as to where the schools exactly were, are in the memories of people.”
An acreage property sits on the site today.
