Clearwater County has moved $35,000 around to replace an aging outhouse at Upper Shunda Creek Campground north of Nordegg.
Financial Services Manager Rhonda Serhan says the project was originally earmarked in the 2025 capital budget, however, it got overlooked when it was moved to operational.
Serhan adds, the outhouse is in very poor condition, with a damaged roof and rotting wood, and has served the campground for decades.
Councillor Neil Ratcliffe inquired what a $35,000 outhouse looks like.
Ag Services Director Matt Martinson responded that they’re latrine-style buildings with no water service, similar to outhouses recently built in Leslieville and Withrow. He adds, the more modern design is conducive to keeping foul smells and heat in the summer under control.
A motion passed that would see the $35,000 taken out of contingency and transferred to Parks & Recreation to fund the new outhouse.
While the outhouse is the last of three that were on the county’s priority list, Councillor Genny Mehlhaff inquired about building another outhouse in the Ya Ha Tinda region within the south end of the county.
