Starting April 1, 2025, Rocky Mountain House residents and business owners will save money on their solid waste pickup.
The savings will come from the town’s recent opt-in to the provincial Extended Producer Responsibility Model (EPR) for recycled materials.
Certain rate updates for solid waste were overlooked in a December 2024 rates and fees discussion among council, explained Betty Quinlan, director of Corporate Services.
Previously, rate fees for solid waste pickup would decrease from $28.62 to $24.00 starting April 1.
However, another “step” in the process involves access to the Eco Centre for those who don’t benefit from curbside pickup, said Quinlan. She notes that negotiations are ongoing with Circular Economy and Eco Centre, and that those rates will be determined at a later date.
In a package presented to council, those Eco Centre numbers were calculated to increase nominally from from $20.80 to $22.
Under the EPR system, familiar paper and packaging products such as cardboard and newsprint will be processed, but it will also greatly expand what types of materials can be recycled.
Those include chip bags, shrink wrap, steel or aluminum aerosol containers, cushion packaging, and plastic egg cartons, among dozens of other items.
