Clearwater County has proposed nearly $1 million in capital projects for Leslieville in 2025, which aims to improve safety and recreation opportunities in the area.
Amenities at the Leslieville Fire Training Centre are among the developments, with a $600,000 investment earmarked.
The money will fund a flashover simulator on a concrete pad. A flashover simulator is a fire training prop designed for observation and recognition of fire behaviour.
John Liadis, fire chief of Clearwater Regional Fire Rescue Services (CRFRS) says flashover conditions have been a focus area for many years in the fire service and have caused many line of duty deaths. He says preventative training demonstrates the warning signs and what to look for when these conditions are changing.
The investment will also see a pressurized hydrant system completed. The county is planning to install a pumphouse near the existing dry hydrant near within the Leslieville Fire Training Grounds, with the primary purpose of providing a pressurized water system to the existing fire hydrants within the grounds.
Additionally, in the event of a fire in the Leslieville response area, a pressurized water source would fill water tanks more efficiently to provide a quicker fill time and return back to the fire, says Liadis.
The projects are expected to be completed by November 2025.
Work is also set to be wrapped up at the nearby Leslieville Recreation Area. That includes plans for spring 2025 which entails adding goal posts, signage, an information kiosk and further landscaping. A country spokesperson says more details on the signs and kiosk will be coming in the near future.
Visitors will find several upgrades already completed, such as new benches, a picnic table, fresh pavement, ball diamonds and a playground, as well as a new outhouse.
‘Leslieville Recreation Area’ is a temporary name, as its expected to receive a new official name through future consultation with community members.

Work is also ongoing at the downtown Leslieville ‘Community Feature’ space. The county plans to continue enhancements, including earthworks, fencing, and other site features, with additional consultation scheduled with Ag Services to determine remaining amenities.
2024 projects saw the completion of a new playground as well as relocation of mailboxes in the area to allow for better park access.

Also, $50,000 has been set aside to repair roadwork deficiencies following asphalt overlay work which was completed summer 2024.
Work has also been planned for south of the hamlet, with a $5.5 million upgrade to the Wall Street Road and $10,000 in road work in Condor on the docket.
The initiatives are part of a “big year” of capital spending for the county, as it passed over $85.6 million in spending on Jan. 7, 2025.
