The African Children’s Choir, a beloved group that has touched the hearts of audiences around the world, is set to perform at the Rocky Mountain House Church of the Nazarene on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 7:00 p.m.. The free concert, which is part of their current Canadian tour, offers a rare opportunity for the community to experience the choir’s vibrant performances and learn more about the important work they are doing to help children across Africa.
For Tina Sipp, the choir’s manager, the African Children’s Choir’s mission is personal. “We’ve been around for 40 years now,” Sipp shared. “It all started in 1984 when a man named Ray, who had been working with persecuted churches, was traveling in Uganda during a civil war. On one of his trips, he gave a ride to a young boy who had lost both of his parents in the conflict. This boy, despite the immense pain and loss, sang praise songs during the journey.” She says the child’s resilience and joy left a lasting impression, inspiring Ray to create a choir that would give a voice to children facing similar hardships.
The choir’s purpose is more than just entertainment. Sipp explained that it works with children who come from backgrounds where families can’t afford even a basic education, let alone school uniforms, books, and other materials. Through our tours, she says funds are raised to provide these children with access to education. “Over the years, we’ve now helped over 59,000 children across Africa receive an education.”
The upcoming concert in Rocky Mountain House will not only showcase the incredible talents of the choir but also provide an opportunity for local residents to make a difference in the lives of African children. “We don’t charge for tickets. The concert is free to attend, but we do take up a love offering,” Sipp explained. “All proceeds from this offering go directly to helping children across Africa, as well as supporting the children you see on stage.”
This tour marks a special milestone for the choir, as they return to Canada after a hiatus due to the pandemic. “The children just landed on Monday (March 3), and they’re excited to begin this journey with us. This tour is a three-month trek across Canada, and we’re thrilled to visit communities that have supported us over the years.”
While the choir has been around since 1984, Sipp couldn’t recall if it has ever stopped in Rocky Mountain House. “I don’t know for sure, but if we had, it was a very, very long time ago. So I don’t think there’s been anything in the recent 20 years as I as far as I can see.”
The choir just wrapped up a four-and-a-half-month tour of the United States, which Sipp says saw the group performing around 16 concerts a month.
For many, Sipp says the African Children’s Choir’s performances are unforgettable experiences that leave lasting impressions. Their blend of traditional African songs, vibrant dances, and powerful messages of hope resonates deeply with audiences of all ages and backgrounds. “The choir transcends all lines,” Sipp said. “Whether you’re young or old, there’s something about their performance that speaks to everyone. We invite everyone in Rocky Mountain House to come out, be inspired, and support the mission of helping children in need.”
The event at the Rocky Mountain House Church of the Nazarene is an evening not to be missed. “We are grateful to the church for hosting us and for the support they’ve given us,” Sipp said. “It’s through the generosity of local churches and communities that we are able to continue this important work.”
The concert begins at 7:00 p.m. and everyone is encouraged to attend—no tickets are required. There will also be opportunities to support the African Children’s Choir in other ways, including through sponsorship programs and product tables.
