Caroline School is a top priority in Wild Rose School Division’s (WRSD) 2026-2029 capital plan, which would see the existing, nearly 70-year-old building receive a litany of upgrades.
The long-awaited modernization and “right-sizing” project aims to address inefficiencies and update the aging infrastructure of the Kindergarten to Grade 12 facility, which has been serving the community since 1956.
The school, which received upgrades in the 60s, 70s and 80s, as well as a 1993 addition, currently operates at just 60 per cent capacity, and Alberta Education expects utilization to reach 90 per cent with improvements.

The report shows the bevy of expansions over the decades, however, have resulted in an inefficient layout, making it difficult to manage and supervise students. The school faces a variety of issues, including outdated mechanical systems, poor natural lighting, and a costly air system prone to leaks. The report shows the electrical systems are nearing the end of their life, and the grounds have drainage and safety concerns, including damaged sidewalks and handrails.
The plan’s proposed solution involves modernizing the existing building envelope, upgrading heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, and replacing electrical components. Interior renovations would improve the efficiency of learning spaces and introduce natural light to areas lacking windows. The school’s grounds would also be updated to address drainage issues and ensure pedestrian safety.
WRSD’s report shows failure to modernize would result in continued reliance on piecemeal maintenance, ultimately leading to higher costs and a less effective learning environment. Recent issues, such as site drainage, ice pooling, and roof problems, emphasize the urgency of this project.
The plan involving heating plant components such as boilers, pumps and other accessories is similar to those installed in Breton High School during 2021. The upgrades are expected to be completed at Caroline School during the summer of 2025.
As part of the WRSD capital plan, Caroline School’s modernization is classified as Priority 3, alongside other significant projects like the right-sizing of elementary schools in Rocky Mountain House (Priority 1) and the modernization of Aurora Elementary (Priority 2) and Frank Maddock High School (Priority 4).
The plan has been sent off to Alberta Education for its final approval.
