The Rocky Learning Centre is offering a free opportunity for those looking to enhance their job readiness skills with the New Futures program, running from April 7-10.
The event is designed to help participants refresh their resumés, sharpen their interview skills, and explore other crucial career-building tools.
The program, which offers much more than just resumé development, also focuses on essential life skills such as change management, cover letter-crafting, and interview techniques.
According to Sarah Fotty, one of the interim co-executive directors of the Rocky Learning Centre, the New Futures program aims to provide a comprehensive skill set for those who have lost their jobs or are struggling to secure employment.
“New Futures is exactly what it says – it’s about giving people a new future,” says Fotty. “It’s a life-changing program, especially for those who might have expired certifications or who need additional skills to be competitive in the job market.”
In addition to these core offerings, the program includes an exciting incentive for participants: upon successful completion of the workshop, individuals may qualify for funded training courses such as First Aid, H2S, or Elevated Work Platform certifications. These certifications are often required by employers in various industries, providing participants with a significant advantage when applying for jobs.
“This program can be a huge boost for someone who may not have the required qualifications or certifications to enter certain fields. Once they finish the program and get a letter from an employer, we can submit the request to the government for funding to cover these courses,” explains Fotty. “These are the kinds of certifications that many employers are looking for, and it can really set someone up for success.”
For those concerned about the cost, the New Futures program is completely free of charge. Even better, there’s no strict deadline for registration – Fotty says participants can walk in at 9:00 a.m. on April 7 and still take part.
But it’s not just about the technical skills – the program also addresses the emotional challenges that often accompany unemployment. “When you lose a job or struggle to find one, it can take a toll on your mental health,” Fotty notes. “Our program also touches on how to cope with those feelings so that you’re mentally prepared when you sit down for an interview, and you can present your best self.”
Fotty says the New Futures program is a vital resource for anyone in the area looking to jumpstart their career and gain a renewed sense of confidence.
“We have had so many people who have been let go from employment in the last while,” says Fotty. “So to have some free help within our community is a big deal.”

This free program is not just a resumé workshop, says Fotty, it’s a comprehensive career revitalization opportunity.
