On May 31, Curtis Field will turn into a track full of fun, flair, and fundraising, as the Mountain Rose Women’s Shelter Association (MRWSA) hosts its inaugural relay event to celebrate 35 years of serving the community.
The idea is simple: teams work together to complete a combined 35 kilometres — one for each year the shelter has been open. “It’s just for fun,” said Lindsay Hunt, volunteer coordinator at the shelter. “No one’s tracking laps. People can walk, run, or stroll in groups. We even have one team planning to run the whole thing.”
Adding a playful twist, participants are encouraged to dress in costumes or team themes. The best-themed team will win tickets to MRWSA’s Country Night fundraiser in the fall, while the individual who collects the most pledges will take home a new camping set donated by Canadian Tire.
So far, nine teams have signed up, with more expected in the weeks ahead. Registration is $25 per person and includes a swag bag and a free BBQ lunch. All funds raised will support MRWSA’s operations, which have recently been impacted by a funding shortfall. As of April 1, the shelter had to reduce its bed count from 28 to 21 due to the end of one-time provincial funding.
“We’re still full all the time,” said Executive Director Cindy Easton earlier this year. “Events like this help us keep going.”

The relay runs Saturday May 31 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Curtis Field. Teams can register by emailing lhunt@mrwsa.net, or by stopping in at the shelter. There’s no minimum pledge, but participants are encouraged to raise what they can.
Hunt adds each registered participant gets their own swag bag. The shelter can be reached at 403-845-5339.
