A fire restriction is now in effect for the entire West Country, including the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area, Clearwater County and the town of Rocky Mountain House, as wildfire danger in the region remains very high.
Under the current restriction, officials advise that all outdoor wood fires are banned on public lands, including in backcountry and random camping areas. The use of fireworks and exploding targets is also prohibited. Burning of any kind, other than campfires on private land, is not permitted.
However, some activities are still allowed, including:
-
Safe wood campfires on private land and in provincial campgrounds with a designated fire ring
-
Backyard firepits
-
Propane fire pits and natural gas-powered appliances
-
Charcoal briquette barbecues
-
Indoor wood-burning fireplaces
-
Open flame oil devices
Residents are being urged to exercise caution and report any wildfires immediately by calling 310-FIRE. Up-to-date information on bans and restrictions is available at albertafirebans.ca.
Alberta Wildfire officials say the risk is being driven by a combination of warm, windy weather and an abundance of dead, dry vegetation — conditions that can cause wildfires to ignite easily and spread rapidly.
