Youth and aviation-curious adults will get a chance to experience flight up close later this month as the Rocky Mountain Flying Club hosts its annual Introduction to Aviation event.
The free event takes place May 24 at the Rocky Mountain House Airport, with activities beginning at 9:30 a.m.
“It’s an introduction to aviation — for some kids, it’s their very first exposure to general aviation,” said Al Aker, kids flying coordinator for the Flying Club. “It’s pretty hands-on. We’ll have at least two or three small aircraft and a helicopter on-site for short flights around the area.”
Participants will also take part in a mini ground school and, if available, hear from a current commercial pilot student about careers in aviation. Aker says the club is targeting youth ages 12 and up but encourages adults with an interest in aviation to attend as well.

The club has been offering the program since 2009, and Aker says several past participants have gone on to become professional pilots.
“We’ve helped some of them earn their licences and seen them return to fly with us,” he said.
Pre-registration is required, as space is limited. Those interested can call Aker at 403-845-0978.
