Clearwater County is teaming up with the Town of Rocky Mountain House to explore a joint bid to host the 2028 Alberta Summer Games.
Clearwater County council voted in favour of partnering with the town to submit a letter of intent, which is due by June 30. A bid committee will be struck in the coming months to prepare the full submission ahead of the Aug. 29 deadline.
During the May 27 council meeting, councillors discussed the potential long-term benefits of hosting the games—particularly when it comes to upgrading local recreational facilities and strengthening regional partnerships.
“It’s an excellent opportunity for our community to apply for grants to upgrade recreational facilities, which benefits both town and county residents,” said Reeve Michelle Swanson.
Councillors debated the financial implications of hosting the event, with some raising concerns about the costs associated with meeting facility standards. While no financial commitment has been made yet, the estimated investment in a previous bid was about $300,000 per municipality.
Council heard that much of the groundwork laid for the unsuccessful 2023 bid remains useful, potentially reducing administrative time and cost. It was also noted that a consultant will not be required to complete the bid package.

As part of the upcoming bid, the newly amalgamated hamlet of Caroline may be included in the list of facilities, along with sites in Leslieville and Condor.
Rocky Mountain House council previously discussed the town’s facility shortcomings, including the need for a synthetic track, upgrades to the rugby field, and the addition of a beach volleyball court. Councillor Tina Hutchinson estimated a new track alone could cost up to $600,000, but noted the town would only be required to host a minimum of 10 out of 14 sports.
In the 2023 bid, Rocky and Clearwater County were unsuccessful in their joint application to host the 2026 Summer Games.
