Brenda Barker, a longtime resident in the south end of Clearwater County is running for council, hoping to represent constituents in Ward 6.
Please provide a little background on yourself, including how long you’ve lived in the Rocky area.
My husband and I moved to James River Bridge about 39 years ago to raise our children in a rural setting. I’ve been a stay-at-home mom. I’ve also been a laborer and a supervisor out at Thunder Forest Products. Later on, I got my degree in Occupational Health and Safety from Ryerson University. I’ve also done safety management as well. I’ve been a longtime resident, farmer and community volunteer in Clearwater County.
Why do you want to run for council in Clearwater County?
I think it’s important that the residents have a voice in council. I don’t think we have had that in the past. I like to be financially responsible as well; so I’d like to reduce some costs for the taxpayers. I think there’s some overspending on stuff that isn’t necessary in this county.
What personal or professional experience do you feel would make you a good mayor?
In meetings as a safety officer, I’ve found I’m a great listener. I’m pretty easy to get along with. It’s not just the Ward 6, it’s the whole county. I work well with others. I’m outspoken, and I will stand up for [important priorities]. I’m not a pushover by any stretch of the imagination.
If elected, what would be a few top priorities?
Well, I think my top priorities would be the streamlining of our bylaws. A 207-page document that takes a Philadelphia lawyer to read is a little much. I’d like to simplify that so that everybody can understand what is needed when you want to build something or when you want to put a sign up.
Where can people learn more about you and your priorities?
Well, I’m out and about in the community. I will go door-to-door when the time gets a little bit closer to the election. I know a lot of people. I’ve been here for 39 years, so people know where to find me.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
I want a voice for all constituents, not just for Ward 6. I’m not here to make everybody’s wish come true, because that’s not going to happen, right? I can’t satisfy everybody’s grievances, but at least they will be heard.
Tim Hoven, and incumbent Bryan Cermak have also filed notice of intent to run in Ward 6.
