Wild Rose School Division (WRSD) has announced the land off Hwy. 11 previously occupied by David Thompson High School, has been turned back over to the province.
WRSD says the transfer was in accordance with regulations, including the Real Property Governance Act and provincial Education Act.
Officials say the transfer was completed for a very nominal sum, as per provincial guidelines.
As for what comes next, WRSD says future use of the site will be determined by the Government of Alberta.
WRSD adds, it looks forward to seeing how the property may be repurposed to support community and provincial needs in the future.
The school had been slated to close its doors Dec. 31, 2021. However, a decision was made in 2020 to keep the school open a little longer to house students from Leslieville and Condor while the DTHS and Charlotte Small projects were completed.
The closure of the building was due, in part, to the school’s sewage lagoon not meeting code and being too costly to repair.
Site remediation work, including removal of the sewage lagoon and demolition of the old building which had stood for decades, was completed in 2023.
The current site of David Thompson High School in Leslieville celebrated its grand opening in June 2023.
