More parking space is coming soon to downtown Rocky Mountain House, as a parcel west of Main St. will be developed into a parking lot.
On July 2, town council passed third reading of a bylaw amendment to see the plot redesignated from medium residential to core commercial.
Now that it’s been redesignated, an existing house on the plot will be demolished, with gravel being laid in the the short term, and pavement in the midterm.
Dean Schweder, Director of Planning and Community Development estimates the plot will likely be gravel in the short term to allow the ground to settle and landscaping to be done, with a requirement for it to be paved within two years.

Michael Fitzsimmons, development officer with the town said there were efforts to reach out to adjacent businesses and landowners, who indicated they had no major concerns.
The request comes from Rocky Eye Care and Mountainview Dental, which are seeking more parking for its employees and customers.
The owners of the parcel said the parking lot could also be used for the general public — Marketplace on Main, for example — as long as visitors are using the parking lot outside of business hours.
No timeline for work has been set.
