Nordegg residents will soon bid farewell to propane for home heating as the Alberta government has announced a $2.5 million contribution to the Nordegg Gasification Project.
The July 17 announcement was made by Nathan Neudorf, Lethbridge East MLA, and Minister of Utilities and Affordability, at the Nordegg Discovery Centre.
“This project will not only bring safe, reliable and more affordable natural gas to the area, but will lay the groundwork to help this beautiful part of the province grow and thrive” said Neudorf.
Neudorf acknowledged the work already begun by Rocky Gas Co-op and Clearwater County, which jointly kicked off the project on its own.

Jason Nixon, Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre MLA and minister of Community and Social Services, says with the announcement, the region has a bright future.
“The mining days are over, the tourism days have started up here,” said Nixon. “We encourage everyone to come to Nordegg to see some of the most beautiful scenery. With this announcement, we’re guaranteeing that Nordegg will have a big future in our province.”

Neudorf says the project has several important benefits, including lowering emissions and costs to residents in the long term, as well as better reliability since residents won’t have to worry about propane tanks freezing in frigid temperatures.
Nixon added, it’ll also increase safety for residents, as propane tanks pose a risk for communities should it be threatened by wildfire.
The 11-kilometre natural gas pipeline will run along Highway 11 and connect to the nearby Tidewater Stolberg Gas Plant.
Clearwater County Reeve Michelle Swanson said it’s a welcome announcement, as Nordegg residents have relied on propane for a very long time.
“This project is a valuable partnership that will create new opportunities for business, and a brighter, more sustainable future for our rural community,” said Swanson.

“The government’s support for the Nordegg Gasification Project is a reminder of the power of partnership in building rural Alberta. It means economic growth, community resilience, and opportunity for generations to come,” said Tom Kee, Executive Director, Federation of Alberta Gas Co-ops.
The province is also providing $8.5 million through the 2025 budget for the Rural Utilities Program to ensure rural communities across Alberta can access gas, power, and water.
