The Town of Rocky Mountain House is considering changes to its Land Use Bylaw (LUB), and has scheduled an Aug. 19 public hearing for residents to provide feedback.
A number of changes have been proposed to the 129-page document. Those include definitions of parcel coverage for residential plots, as well as rules around landscaping, erecting monuments, sea cans, and “soft-sided” buildings.
The proposed bylaw also seeks to add rules surrounding ‘data processing centres’, an area of recent interest, not only for Rocky, but many other similar-sized municipalities in Alberta.

Downtown, there’s also a recommendation to remove the requirement for a second storey or façade in the core commercial district. It compared downtowns in towns like Canmore, Banff and Sylvan Lake where the number of stories on buildings varies. A recommendation stated that requiring a second storey drives up the cost for a development; a decision that should be left to the owner.
An Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station was also added to accommodate anticipation for its future use.
The bylaw passed first reading at the town’s July 15 meeting. You can view all proposed changes (highlighted in red) here.
The public hearing is scheduled Tuesday Aug. 19 at 9 a.m. at council chambers.
