West Country students looking to jump into the health care fold can apply for this year’s Rocky Mountain House Hospital Auxiliary bursary program.
The $2000 bursaries are open to students from Clearwater County and any municipality within who’s entering a health-related field of study including medicine, nursing, therapy and pharmacy.
Rosemary Brown, bursary committee member says criteria includes academic achievement, volunteerism, and a prior commitment to study.
“Students who’ve actually done some post-secondary usually have an edge over Grade 12 graduates,” she says. “But we have given it to Grade 12 students.”
At least one $2000 bursary will be given away. However, Brown says the auxiliary has given as many as four away in a given year where there are many quality applicants.
The awards have been given out since the 1960s and include many notable, current health care professionals as alumni, including Dr. Dolen Kirstein, currently practicing in Rocky Mountain House.
Funds for the bursaries are raised by a variety of means, including the group’s annual spring strawberry tea fundraiser, its pumpkin pie fundraiser in the fall, weekly bingo nights at Dovercourt Hall, and certain one-off fundraisers including BBQs.
Interested applicants can pick up a form at the Rocky Mountain House Health Centre. Deadline to apply is Sept. 1, 2025.
