Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for several communities in the West Country, warning of potentially dangerous weather conditions throughout the afternoon and evening.
The watch is in effect for the Rocky, Leslieville, Crimson Lake, Ferrier and Alhambra areas, where forecasters say conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. There is also a risk of a tornado.
Thunderstorms are expected to develop over west-central Alberta later today and track eastward into the evening hours.
Environment Canada is urging residents in the affected areas to be prepared and take precautions if threatening weather approaches. It recommends seeking shelter in a basement or interior room away from windows, and to protect yourself from flying debris and hail if caught outside.
Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are conducive to the formation of thunderstorms that could produce damaging hail, wind or torrential rain.
