It’ll be all hands on deck if the West Country is successful in its bid to host the 2028 Alberta Summer Games, as a recent letter indicates the games would be spread out throughout the whole region.
A joint letter from the Town of Rocky Mountain House and Clearwater County to Wild Rose School Division (WRDS) proposes a ‘split shift’ model over a seven-day games event:
The games would take place throughout the region including mountain biking at Black Mountain, baseball in Leslieville, softball in Caroline and many sports in the town of Rocky Mountain House.
If selected to host the games, the letter adds the region will see approximately 2000 athletes, coaches and chaperones plus family members visiting the region.
The municipalities are requesting a formal letter of support from WRSD for their bid, as housing of the athletes would be in the schools within the town. Alberta Sport is required to provide mattresses for the athletes, and they would sleep in different classrooms.
Discussions began in early 2025 to renew a bid to host the games.
In 2023, Rocky and Clearwater County were unsuccessful in their joint application to host the 2026 Alberta Summer Games, with the successful applicant, Strathcona County hosting them in July.
