First-time councillor Marley Capraro is putting her hat in the ring to run for a second term on Rocky Mountain House town council.
She provided the following answers to a candidate questionnaire:
Please provide a little background on yourself, including how long you’ve lived in the Rocky area.
I moved to Rocky Mtn House in 2004 fresh out of high school. I’ve been lucky enough to call Rocky home for the last 21 years. It’s where I have chosen to raise my family and build a career in real estate. Rocky is home and I love it here.
Why do you want to run for council?
I’m running for Council again because I feel I have more I’d like to accomplish. We have done some really great work the past two years to attract economic development and I want to keep the momentum going. I’m not ready to say goodbye.
What personal or professional experience do you feel would make you a good councillor?
I think I have a lot of good insight being a mom with kids in sports and a Realtor for what we can add to the community to make it a more attractive place for families. Being a Realtor I have heard often about the importance for families when choosing where to relocate, that a community has recreation opportunities for kids, jobs and amenities to make the community more appealing.
If elected, what would be a few top priorities?
If reelected, my main priorities would be to continue on with our economic development strategy to grow our tax base. By growing our tax base and bringing more jobs and industry to Rocky, we can then better support new recreation facilities, which I feel like the town needs and would really benefit from.
Next on my list would be again more recreation. I’d love to see a field house or dome, whatever it may be. Our kids need to be able to play sports in the winter, and our seniors should be able to keep up walking year-round without worry about icy surfaces on the walking trail.
My next top priority is tourism. Tourism equals money spent in town and thus supports our businesses. We have a beautiful town and region and we should be highlighting it and bringing people in. Doing so can also lead to growth if people come and feel like they don’t want to leave!
Where can people learn more about you and your priorities?
I’m happy to talk to residents about my vision for town and they can reach me on my cell phone, by email and also the forum that will be held before the election. I’m easy to find and get a hold of!
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
The last thing I’d like to add is that serving the community for the last almost four years has truly been an honour. It can be challenging, there’s no doubt about that, but it is also rewarding. I genuinely just want to help people, and I want to see the town and see people thrive.
This past term was challenging the first two years, but we have come together and I feel like we are working towards some really great things. I’m very excited to see what happens here in the next few years — whether that be still sitting in a council chair or watching from the sidelines. I truly think good things are coming.
