Teachers in Alberta are giving strike notice.
President Jason Schilling said Tuesday that unless a deal can be brokered, teachers will strike beginning Monday, Oct. 6.
Schilling spoke of years of neglect against teachers, adding that teachers have long been underpaid.
This comes after months of negotiations, and the teachers voting 95 per cent in favour of strike action in June, before the previous school year had ended.
Just yesterday, Alberta’s finance minister encouraged teachers to take a closer look at the government’s latest offer.
Nate Horner said the government has put $2.3 billion on the table and feels it’s addressed both classroom complexity and salary needs.
The offer reportedly includes wage increases of 12 per cent over four years and a promise to hire three-thousand teachers over three years.
The parties were at the table at the end of August, but talks reached an impasse.
Students then returned to school after the Labour Day long weekend amid the uncertainty.
More to come.
