The Alberta government and Clearwater County are celebrating the opening of the new Taunton Trestle Viewing Area, the latest milestone in the development of the scenic Rail Trail between Nordegg and Rocky Mountain House.
The new site, located between Nordegg and Rocky Mountain House, features access to the Rail Trail and an observation deck overlooking the historic Taunton Trestle. Amenities there include picnic tables, an outhouse and a large parking area.
The province has invested $2.4 million in the first two phases of the Rail Trail project, which includes the new viewing area.
When completed, officials say the 109km trail will connect Nordegg and Rocky Mountain House, following a section of the former Canadian Northern Western Railway line.
The Brazeau Branch rail line and Taunton Trestle bridge were in use from 1914 to 1985.

The site is now being repurposed as a multi-use recreational trail for hikers, mountain bikers and off-highway vehicle users. In winter, the route will also be open for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and dogsledding.
A statement from the office of Todd Loewen, minister of Forestry and Parks reads:
“Alberta’s government is grateful for our continued collaboration with Clearwater County on the development of the scenic Rail Trail between Nordegg and Rocky Mountain House,” the statement said. “I’m proud of Alberta’s efforts to enhance recreation opportunities in areas like the David Thompson Corridor, and I hope Albertans and visitors make the most of this unique outdoor experience.”

Work on the next phases of the project will continue over the next few years.
Phase 3 will link Sunset Creek to the Chambers Creek Provincial Recreation Area, with construction expected to be completed by late 2025.
Phase 4 will extend the trail from Chambers Creek to the Rocky Mountain House town site, pending regulatory and land-use approvals. Construction on Phase 4 is tentatively scheduled to begin fall 2026.
