Following a 2025 rife with uncertainty, work is officially complete to shore up aging trusses at the Rocky Curling Club building.
Local contractor Brovan Builders Ltd. has wrapped up work which included half inch plywood added to the tension cord of the trusses, support added to the bottom side compression cord, and a yellowish LVL product provided by West Fraser added to the side for added strength.
All that remains is a green light from a building inspector, which club officials are confident will come through.
With that, club members are actively putting the ice surface in with the goal of starting a truncated curling season on Jan. 5, 2026.
In all, the project is expected to cost around $500,000 says club president Richard Bonneau — with $300,000 for engineering and approximately $200,000 for materials and contractors.
However, it is a significant cost saving compared to an earlier estimate which pegged repairs to just the five most critical trusses alone at over $400,000. Bonneau estimates that would have cost $500,000 just for the truss repairs, engineering costs notwithstanding.

Bonneau adds, as soon as the contractor moved out Dec. 18, a crew of volunteers tackled the cleanup job, which he says went very smoothly.
“We’re very pleased with the partners that have been there in the community that have helped us through this process,” says Bonneau. “The town, the county, TC Energy, and all kinds of individual donations.”
The town and county both committed $100,000 to the project, with the curling club committing $215,000 for the work.
Additionally, a Nov. 20 fundraiser evening at the building raised around $10,000.

Even though the 2025-2026 curling season will be shortened, Bonneau says the club is still pulling out all the stops to celebrate its 60th anniversary.
That includes an opening celebratory bonspiel to be played the third week of January.
The normal mens’ and ladies’ bonspiel, as well as the Oilmen’s Bonspiel will be played during the shortened season.
Also, Bonneau announced that the season will be extended. Normally, the curling season ends near the end of March, but this year, he says the season will be extended to the end of April culminating with a big celebration to mark the club’s 60th year.

With the trusses shored up, attention now turns to repairs to the asphalt roof of the building.
Ultimately, Bonneau says that work will hinge on the club receiving a provincial Community Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP) grant.
