For the first time, Rocky Mountain House will be hosting The Coldest Night of the Year in support of the Mountain Rose Women’s Shelter (WRWSA).
The nationwide event sees teams fundraise to participate in a two or five kilometer outdoor walk around Rocky’s trail system.
The idea behind the event is to — even in a small way — understand the plight of those who are experiencing poverty or homelessness, says Lindsay Hunt, volunteer coordinator with WRWSA.
The organization has set a $20,000 fundraising goal for the event, with Hunt adding that the need for programming at WRWSA is critical.
“We are at 21 beds, that’s as many people as we can have in the shelter,” she says. “Grocery and utility prices have gone up — we need to keep fundraising to continue doing what we’re doing.”

In 2025, Red Deer held a Coldest Night of the Year walk which saw 245 walkers on 56 teams raise over $92,500 for the Red Deer Food Bank and the Mustard Seed.
During the walk in Rocky, there will be rest stops along the way with cookies and hot chocolate, and following the walk, Hunt says participants are invited to the Rocky Legion for buns and chili.
Those interested can get their teams together starting now, says Hunt, as registration is open on the Coldest Night of The Year website.
The walk happens Saturday Feb. 28 from 4-7 p.m. It will start and finish at the Rocky Legion.
