An organization that has planned many popular events in the Rocky area for 43 years is facing an uncertain future.
The Confluence Heritage Society has organized initiatives such as Fur Trade Christmas, History on Tap, Halloween on Main, National Historic Site puppet shows and the former Fright Night at the Site.
But citing a lack of community involvement, the group now finds itself at a crossroads.
“The lack of volunteers is a systemic problem in a lot of places,” said Jan Chant, president of the Confluence Heritage Society. “There’s just a few people trying to manage a whole lot — whether it’s administrative work or organizing projects.”
The society recently launched a reflection survey, with results presented at a February board meeting. Chant said the findings made it clear the organization’s future hinges on more people stepping up to fill board and volunteer roles.
Without the society, Chant said, many events residents have come to expect may no longer take place.
“Sometimes you don’t miss it until it’s gone,” she said. “We’re hoping people don’t have to miss it.”
The society is now calling on community members to get involved. Those interested can email confluenceheritagesociety@gmail.com for more information.
