The Nordegg natural gas pipeline has reached the hamlet, and Rocky Gas Co-op officials say customers can begin connecting to the utility immediately.
While the project ran slightly behind schedule due to weather, permitting and ground disturbance challenges, officials say it has been completed on budget.
“Natural gas is significantly safer and more environmentally friendly than having ‘propane bombs’ spread out across the Western Front,” said Genny Mehlhaff, board director with Rocky Gas Co-op.
Mehlhaff has long touted the safety benefits of underground utilities, as she says above-ground propane tanks pose threat events such as wildfires.
Rocky Gas Co-op members can connect to the system by requesting a utility right-of-way from Clearwater County.
However, Mehlhaff said some historic homes in Nordegg may require retrofits. While some heating systems are dual-fuel compatible, others may need upgrades to ensure safe and efficient operation.
The $8-million project was a joint venture between Rocky Gas Co-op, Clearwater County and the Alberta government, which announced a $2.5-million grant in July 2025.

In a statement, Nathan Neudorf, minister of affordability and utilities, said the pipeline will provide more reliable and affordable home heating and could help residents save up to 25 per cent on utility bills.
Neudorf noted, if Budget 2026 passes, the government will continue $8 million in funding for similar projects through initiatives like the Rural Utility Grant program and the Rural Gas Grant program.
Mehlhaff said she was pleased with the co-operative spirit of the project and hopes it can serve as a model for similar initiatives across the province.
“I am extremely excited — this is one of the first major projects undertaken by a co-operative in many years,” she said. “We are excited to have worked with the province, the county and the gas federation, and I’m hopeful other communities will see what we did in Nordegg and do the same.”
