The town of Rocky Mountain House is advising that both outdoor ice surfaces it maintains— the Curtis Field skating oval and the Rec Centre outdoor hockey rink— are closed for the season.
Citing warm weather settling in for the closure, the town extended gratitude to the crews who prepared and maintained the rinks this year.
It was something of a truncated season for skating enthusiasts in Rocky, as the skating oval opened Dec. 20, several weeks later than usual as November and December saw unseasonable warm weather. The town typically relies on 10 to 14 cold weather days to prepare the rink.
Due to a rise in temperatures in late February, the oval has been closed since Feb. 25, though the hockey rink remained open at that time.
Environment & Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is forecasting warmer-than-average temperatures to extend into mid-March.

As the warm weather settles in, our outdoor rinks are now officially closed for the season. A huge thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy the rinks this winter, and to the dedicated crews who worked to keep the ice in great shape. See you next season! pic.twitter.com/qtmBBthLH5
