In a season full of ups and downs for the Rocky Rams, rivals Sylvan Lake Wranglers dominated— becoming Heritage Junior Hockey League (HJHL) champions for 2025.
A banner year for the team, the Wranglers won the championship in the best-of-five against the Carstar Okotoks Bisons on Thursday evening 2-1.
In Okotoks, the Wranglers went down a goal in the first period but in the second frame they took their first lead and held onto it thanks to a pair of goals from Aydden Shaw and Owen Callow.
Sylvan Lake goaltender Kaden Toussaint had a championship-winning performance turning away 45 of 46 shots.
Earlier in the series, the Wranglers won Games 1 and 2 by scores of 4-2, and 5-0. In Game 3 in Sylvan Lake, the Bisons avoided the sweep with a 6-5 victory at the Nexsource Centre.
The Bisons were playing for their fourth straight HJHL league title after beating the Cochrane Generals in 2022, and the Wranglers in the 2023 and 2024.
Previously, Sylvan Lake swept Airdrie and Red Deer in the quarter and semi finals.
The Wranglers playoff journey will continue at the Hockey Alberta Junior B Provincial Championship in Morinville from April 2-6.
While there, they’ll face off against the top Junior B talent from across Alberta.
The Rams, who missed the playoffs this year with a 12-25-1 record, struggled against the dominant Wranglers losing all four matchups during the regular season.
