West Country residents considering a run for town or county council in this fall’s municipal election are being offered a chance to learn the ropes through a new series of webinars hosted by Alberta Municipalities (ABmunis) and Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA).
The sessions are designed to help prospective candidates in small-to-mid-size municipalities understand the roles, responsibilities and expectations of serving on local council. Topics will include the structure of municipal councils, how municipal government differs from provincial and federal levels, and the personal and professional rewards of public service.
It’s also expected to be an inside look at how you can make a real difference in the community.
The webinars will also feature guest speakers from local councils who will share their real-world experiences, and include a live Q&A session where attendees can ask questions and gain insight into the realities of municipal leadership.
According to ABmunis, the content is specifically tailored for residents of Alberta municipalities with populations under 20,000 — such as villages, towns, and small cities — though any Albertan is welcome to attend.
This initiative is part of a broader educational campaign by ABmunis, RMA, and Alberta Municipal Affairs ahead of the October 20, 2025 municipal election. In a previous statement, Clearwater County Chief Administrative Officer Rick Emmons emphasized the goal of the initiative: to provide a “comprehensive and authentic introduction to municipal service,” including daily responsibilities and the process of running for office.
The first “Small and Mid-size Municipality” webinar is scheduled for April 29, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Additional sessions will follow on:
