Northern Crossing Music and Drama Society is gearing up for its annual spring musical, and this year, audiences can expect high-energy dance numbers, big vocals, and a whole lot of 1980s nostalgia with Footloose hitting the stage later this month.
Director and costume designer Jesslyn Miller says the production has been building momentum in the community since auditions were held in the fall.
“It’s a big show with a big cast— we have 30 people up on that stage,” says Miller. “A full third of them have never done this before, it’s been fun watching them explore and discover that they have voices and dancing feet.”
Miller adds while there are some new faces, many veterans are also returning, including alumni from the 2024 production of Grease.
Based on the 1984 film of the same name, Footloose follows a city teenager who moves to a small town where dancing has been banned. Miller says the show features all the familiar hits such as “Let’s Hear It for the Boy”, “Holding Out for a Hero,” and, of course, “Footloose”.
She also adds the show continues Northern Crossing’s long-held tradition of having a live band of local musicians along with choreographed dance.
Miller notes Northern Crossing has had a live band in every single production since 1986. “That’s something that’s becoming rarer and rarer, and we’re really proud of that.”
The 2025 production will take place at the Lou Soppit Community Centre, with evening performances set for April 25, 26 and May 1, 2 and 3. Doors open at 7 p.m. with the show starting at 7:30 p.m. A single matinee performance is scheduled for April 27, with doors opening at 1:30 p.m. and curtain at 2 p.m.
Tickets are available at the Burly Beard Tattoo Studio on Main Street for $30 plus taxes and service fees, or online through Showpass. Accessibility seating is available for purchase.
