A throwback fundraiser with a twist brought plenty of laughs and generous donations to this year’s Rocky Chamber Trade Show.
West Country Family Service Association’s (WCFSA) “Jail and Bail” event raised close to $9,000 over two days, exceeding expectations and reigniting community support for senior services across the region.
“It was a fantastic event,” said Marina Kulich, executive director of WCFSA. “This was something new for us, but also nostalgic. People remembered it from years ago, and those new to the concept loved the fun idea.”
Thirteen “arrestees” — local leaders and community members — spent an hour in a mock jail cell, raising funds from their networks in exchange for bail. Each had a goal of $500. Kulich said many not only met, but exceeded that threshold, with the highest individual total topping $1,200.
“We had a lot of anonymous donations too — people just wanting to support the cause,” she added.
Funds raised will support WCFSA’s privately funded programs, which rely on donations to offset costs for services like Meals on Wheels, Lifeline, housekeeping, and transportation.
“These programs are vital for the health and well-being of our community and senior community,” said Kulich. “The money will go directly toward any deficits and meeting rising demand.”

Originally floated as a dunk tank, the fundraiser was reimagined in a more interactive format. Participants were issued novelty arrest warrants for such tongue-in-cheek offences as “being an amazing citizen” and “demonstrating community pride.”
Among those arrested were local elected officials, business leaders, and familiar faces from community organizations and media.
Kulich said the response has left the organization hopeful for future editions.
Donations are still being accepted. Anyone interested in contributing or volunteering can contact WCFSA at 403-845-2033 or info@wsccefsa.com.
