Clearwater County is inviting the public to attend a series of open houses in May to review and provide feedback on draft Area Structure Plans (ASPs) for the Saunders-Alexo and Whitegoat Lakes development nodes, part of an effort to promote tourism in the West Country.
The ASPs, developed in partnership with the Province of Alberta, aim to encourage the development of commercial recreation facilities while protecting the region’s natural landscapes.
The proposed plans identify specific sites for tourism infrastructure, with a focus on minimizing impact to environmentally sensitive areas.
The Whitegoat Lakes node, located roughly 48 kilometres west of Nordegg, is recognized for its diverse ecosystems, proximity to the North Saskatchewan River, and cultural significance.

The ASP says Saunders-Alexo node, running along Hwy. 11 corridor, also presents opportunities for commercial recreation development— all while preserving critical wildlife corridors, steep riverbanks, historic sites and wetlands.
The public engagement sessions are scheduled for:
- Saturday, May 17 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Nordegg Community Centre
- Wednesday, May 21 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in a virtual format (registration required)
- Friday, May 23 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Rocky Mountain House Regional Recreation Centre (Subway Room)
- Saturday, May 24 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., again at the Nordegg Community Centre
Officials say input gathered during these sessions will help refine planning directions for both nodes.
Draft ASPs are available for public review on Clearwater County’s website.
