Two historic trestle bridges in Nordegg are undergoing major rehabilitation work as part of a $700,000 project aimed at creating a heritage walking trail through the community.
Trestle 3, located east of Cherie Avenue, is nearly complete with only minor deficiencies remaining. Crews have now shifted their focus to Trestle 1, which sits west of Cherie Avenue. Both structures are expected to be completed by July 31, 2025, according to Clearwater County.
The trestles are intended for pedestrian use only, and eventually, all three will form part of a walking trail around Nordegg.
According to county officials, the age of Trestles 2 and 3 is unknown, but Trestle 1 is believed to have been constructed in 1937. Officials add, it’s assumed they were all built around the same time.
The bridges remain closed to the public during construction. Trestle 2, which also sits east of Cherie Ave., is currently closed.

Kate Reglin, capital project supervisor with Clearwater County, says the bridges were identified for repair following an engineering review.
The work is one of several infrastructure projects underway in the Nordegg area this summer. Sidewalk repairs are scheduled to begin soon on Lily Avenue, while utility installation continues in the Industrial Subdivision’s second phase. Power poles have been installed and shallow utility coordination is ongoing.
A separate $305,000 project to install streetlights in Nordegg’s historic commercial core is expected to wrap up by September.
Meanwhile, construction is also planned at the Nordegg Cemetery. The first phase — which includes earthworks and roadworks — is valued at an estimated $600,000. Tar-ific Construction Ltd. has been awarded the contract and has already completed tree removal at the site.
