The track at Curtis Field was alive with community spirit on Saturday as around 52 participants came together to support the Mountain Rose Women’s Shelter Association (MRWSA), raising more than $10,000 in the shelter’s inaugural 35-kilometre relay.
The event, held May 31, marked the shelter’s 35th anniversary with a unique twist — teams worked together to complete a total of 35 km, one for each year the organization has served the community.
“It was a great day overall,” said Lindsay Hunt, volunteer coordinator with the shelter. “We’re so grateful to everyone who participated, sponsored, or volunteered to make it happen.”

Adding fun to the fundraising, teams were encouraged to dress in costume. The coveted prize for best theme — tickets to the MRWSA Country Night fundraiser in the fall — went to the Pink Flamingos.

The winner of the camping package, donated by Canadian Tire, was Carolyn Lavallee, who brought in the highest amount in pledges for the day.

In addition to the fun and BBQ lunch for the entire community, the event helped raise critical funds for the shelter, which recently reduced its bed count due to a loss in provincial funding.
