Former Clearwater County councillor Cammie Laird hopes to return to council this fall, running in Ward 2.
Please provide a little background on yourself, including how long you’ve lived in the area.
Clearwater County has been our home for over 22 years. I am a rural Alberta gal, fourth generation farmer and retired fire chief. I am an advocate of life-long learning and I enjoy an active lifestyle with my husband and family in one of the most beautiful places, here along the eastern slopes.
Why do you want to run for council?
I have been in public service my entire adult life and I have a passion for our community. I believe in community sustainability and growth through service and dedication. I have past experience with leadership, administration and governance, and I know I have plenty to offer.
On a more personal note; our children and grandchildren live here and I would like to ensure all our children and grandchildren have a future here in our community. I understand what it takes to secure our community’s future and I know we can achieve our shared goals now and for generations to come.
What personal or professional experience do you feel would make you a good councillor?
Growing up, raising a family, working and volunteering in rural Alberta has taught me valuable insights and practical solutions. I have a strong work ethic and I know the importance of rural life, and what core values of our community holds dear.
From a professional perspective; I have a degree in Business and another in Education, as well as professional leadership, safety and emergency services credentials.
My first political exposure was (2017–2021) when I had the privilege to represent Clearwater County as a councillor. That experience allowed me to actively participate on various boards and committees allowing me to gain insights into our governance model, the role of administration and the importance of council service, leadership, representation and advocacy for our community.
As a retired fire chief, I have the unique privilege to understand the various issues our community faces today and the principles we value.
These roles allow me to appreciate the level of time and commitment to the job; ensuring that both council and administration maintain accountability and transparency. I have gained valuable perspectives about what is important to people, our community and the roles of leadership and service.
If elected, what would be a few top priorities?
These days we face many challenges in order to meet the needs; without sacrificing the welfare of future generations.
That means:
-
Accountability and Transparency: Of government, through effective policy and local governance that aligns with community values and principles.
-
Fiscal Prudence: Through practicality and prioritization
• Balancing budget and needs while managing precious resources with common sense solutions. -
Community: Taking care of our county by:
-
Actively engaging with community members and understanding community needs and priorities
-
Advocating, promoting and preserving necessary services and projects that strengthen our community’s future.
-
I understand what it takes to secure our community’s future and I believe that by focusing on these key areas we can achieve our goals now and for generations to come.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?
I’m looking forward to an opportunity to work again with Clearwater County council. I’m a proud Albertan, and I’m determined to see our community become the very best it can be. I’m committed to achieving the goals that our community is looking for.
