Wildfire prevention reminders
This time of year, the wildfire danger often increases as warmer temperatures, dry conditions and gusty winds can quickly dry out grasses, branches and other material on the forest floor. Wildfires can start easily and spread quickly under these conditions. If you live, work, or recreate in forested areas, here are some ways you can help prevent wildfires:
Campfire safety
- Keep your campfire small and controlled. Never leave it unattended. Always fully extinguish your fire by soaking it with water, stirring the ashes and soaking it again until it is cool to the touch. Always check Alberta Fire Bans for any burning restrictions in your area.
Off-highway vehicle (OHV) safety
- Stick to designated trails when operating OHVs. Stop regularly to check around the exhaust and muffler for debris buildup. Keep your machine clean and free of dry grass, leaves, or other flammable materials. Always carry firefighting equipment such as a shovel and a bucket for water to quickly put out any sparks or flames.
Report wildfires
- Recent lightning in the area increases the chance that some fires may still be smoldering unnoticed and could flare up later when conditions become favorable. If you see smoke or any signs of wildfire, please report it immediately by calling 310-FIRE (3473). Early reporting helps wildfire crews respond quickly, reducing the risk of the fire spreading.
