The Rocky Sundevils fastball team walked away with silver as the runners-up in the U15C fastball provincial tournament in Leduc.
The team, made up of players from Rocky Mountain House, Leslieville, Bentley and Rimbey, opened the tournament July 19 with wins against Calgary and Fort Saskatchewan, before rain forced a postponement.
When the tournament picked up again on July 26, coach Clint Rolfsen said the girls continued to play at a high level.
“We practiced a little bit the week before,” said Rolfsen. “The weather wasn’t much better; they actually handed out the medals in the pouring rain.”
The team beat Camrose to move into the final four. Then, the team beat Calgary and Leduc to secure the bronze medal.
In the final against Irma Tigers, the team kept it close, holding them to one run through four innings, but ultimately fell short at the end of the game.
While it wasn’t the result they wanted, Rolfsen says they were the only Rocky-based fastball team to make it to provincials.
The Sundevils roster features 11 players, including two recent additions brought in to replace an injured player and an overage teammate.
The Sundevils earned their provincial berth earlier this month by advancing through a Central Alberta zone qualifier, where they beat Sylvan Lake twice and lost to Camrose.
“The team is two years old, they’ve come a long way,” said Rolfsen. “It was a real growing experience for everyone— coaches and players.”
