West Country resident Hazen Letwin will be taking his first shot at elected office this fall, running in Clearwater County’s Ward 2.
He provided the following answers to a candidate questionnaire:
Please provide a little background on yourself, including how long you’ve lived in the Rocky area.
I was born in Alberta and moved to the Leslieville area at the age of 10, (the early 70’s), and was raised on a mixed farm. I still live on this family farm with my wife of 42 years and we raised our 2 children here. I have been self-employed most of my working career owning our own business (with my wife’s help of course) and then oilfield consulting in later years.
Why do you want to run for council?
I have been asked by many friends and neighbours to run, as they are not happy with the direction the county is going. I have been asked in the past but have always been too busy. I now have the time to give back to the county, by listening to the citizens, the taxpayers, and being their voice for positive change while protecting our Heritage and rural way of life.
What personal or professional experience do you feel would make you a good councillor?
As a businessman and an oilfield consultant I have worked with many levels of government as well as the public and landowners. Communication is a must!
I’ve worked with cost tracking, books, budgets, and balance sheets.
I am here to listen, and know how you want your tax dollars spent.
If elected, what would be a few top priorities?
-
Make a LUB that is simple, that it can be understood, without fear and intimidation.
-
Work to make sure Farming and Industry can co-exist and work together for a strong future.
Where can people learn more about you and your priorities?
I will be going door to door campaigning, handing out cards, and setting out signs. Feel free to stop and say hello as I will do the same.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
We are all the same, as we are all different. If elected I will not be able to please everyone, but I will listen to your concerns.
Ward 2 is on the east end of the county, encompassing the hamlets of Leslieville and Withrow. Its boundaries run east of Taimi Rd, south of Hwy. 12, and north of Hwy. 11.
