This is a candidate profile for Dale Shippelt who’s running for reelection to Rocky Mountain House town council.
Please provide a little background on yourself, including how long you’ve lived in the area.
Rocky has been my home forever! With over 40 years of business ownership in our community and extensive experience as a Town Councillor, I’ve had the privilege of serving on many boards within our community. These roles have helped me build strong relationships and gain a deeper understanding of our residents’ needs and wishes.
The governance of our community has always interested me. I have a keen interest in making informed decisions with a vision for the long-term well-being of our community.
Why do you want to run for council?
I believe a strong community is important for growth and prosperity. The experience I’ve gained over the years has provided me with the insight and tools to help shape Rocky’s future in a positive direction. We must not remain stagnant. In the last few years, we’ve launched several initiatives aimed at spurring growth — and my goal is to see the results of those efforts.
I’m letting my name stand to continue building and securing more wins for our community.
What personal or professional experience do you feel would make you a good councillor?
Experience is key. I have 13 years of Town Council experience. I have sat on the Town’s Municipal Planning Commission board for 20 years; I was the Chair of St. Matthew Parish Finance Committee; I spent 5 years on the Advisory Board for TransAlta Utilities.
I have contributed to several Advisory Committees for Alberta Health Services, and have served on our local Health Foundation for 18 years, including the past 8 years as Treasurer. For the past 35 years I’ve held the role of local Justice of the Peace.
Along with these roles, I’ve contributed to numerous boards and committees as a Council Representative, and was awarded the 2024 Chamber of Commerce Community Builder Award.
Additionally, I know how to handle relationships and work through conflicts. I have experience with property development, zoning regulations, and infrastructure planning. A strong understanding of municipal bylaws, governance models, and how our town operates.
I have knowledge of budgeting and feel fiscal responsibility and sustainable decisions are important. I value transparency and remain open and available to address questions or concerns from community members.
If elected, what would be a few top priorities?
I would like to see a continuation of the Council’s strategic goals. In no given order, this would include:
-
Getting shovel-ready residential, commercial and industrial lands
-
Ensuring our present infrastructure is maintained
-
Exploring new recreational opportunities
-
Pushing tourism
We have so many attributes within our community, all which cannot be overlooked. We cannot afford to sit on hands and do nothing.
Oh, I don’t like paying more taxes! Smart planning and responsible growth matters.
Where can people learn more about you and your priorities?
My office is always open for folks to come by. I want to know the thoughts and feelings within our community. We are elected to represent the citizens of the community, not our personal agendas.
