This is a candidate profile for Tina Hutchinson who is running for reelection on Rocky Mountain House town council.
Please provide a little background on yourself, including how long you’ve lived in the area.
Rocky Mountain House has been my home for 20 years. I have been a partner in two successful local businesses: an oilfield service company and The Sandwich Hutch, which many of you may remember.
I also volunteered for over three years with the 2019 Alberta Masters Games—a project that played a big part in my decision to first run for council. The way the town, county, and provincial partners came together to host that event was inspiring. It showed the true strength of collaboration and what we can achieve when we work together as a community.
Why do you want to run for council?
I am running for re-election because I believe strong communities create the foundation for strong, sustainable economic growth. By attracting people, supporting businesses, and fostering resilience, we can secure long-term prosperity.
Rocky Mountain House has tremendous potential for growth, and our Strategic Plan has set us on a positive path. Over the past two years, momentum has been building. With continued collaboration among residents, neighboring communities, and all levels of government, I believe even greater opportunities lie ahead for Rocky.
What personal or professional experience do you feel would make you a good councillor?
My past four years on council have given me valuable knowledge and insight into municipal governance. I also completed the Municipal Elected Leadership Certificate through the University of Alberta’s Augustana Extended Education Program, covering seven key areas of municipal governance.
Beyond formal training, I have spent many hours researching municipal government and actively participating in workshops and webinars to stay informed and bring fresh ideas to council discussions.
As a business owner in both the oilfield and food service industries, I understand the diverse challenges our local businesses face. My experience with the 2019 Alberta Masters Games further developed my skills in planning, budgeting, and collaboration with other municipalities, the Government of Alberta, sponsors, and volunteers.
These combined experiences give me the perspective and skills to make balanced, informed decisions for our community.
If elected, what would be a few top priorities?
If elected, a few of my top priorities would include:
-
Strengthening community connections and culture.
-
Supporting local businesses and creating the conditions for sustainable growth.
-
Promoting tourism to showcase our natural assets and attract visitors and investment.
-
Addressing housing challenges to ensure affordable, suitable options for residents and newcomers.
-
Encouraging pride in our town to help attract and retain residents, workers, and investment.
Is there anything else you’d like to add
I am grateful for the opportunity to have served this past term on council. It has allowed me to meet many people and contribute to committees that help our town prosper. Over the last year and a half, Rocky has earned recognition across the province as a resilient community that works together to make things happen.
Moving forward, we must continue to collaborate, communicate, and celebrate our successes. I am confident I can continue to be part of the Town Council team that helps lead Rocky Mountain House toward an even brighter future.
