After a few sand traps and water hazards along the way, Rocky Mountain House’s new disc golf course is now open to the public.
The new course located north of West Central High School, offers nine holes of disc golf action for pros and novices alike.
Town officials describe it is as a fun and challenging course that offers great scenery through a beautiful wooded area in the heart of town.

Town officials describe it is as a fun and challenging course that offers great scenery through a beautiful wooded area in the heart of town.
“We know it’s a bit of a challenging course because of the wooded nature of the area, we’ve kept it quite a natural course,” says Laura Button, communications coordinator with the Town of Rocky Mountain House. “Closed toed shoes are recommended — but it’s a lot of fun.”
Those looking to play the course can start on hole one, just north of the dog park.

For beginners concerned that it might bear similarities to rule-heavy traditional golf, such as pace of play or dress codes, Button says it’s all about families having fun.
“[Disc golf] is just fun– if you’re having it fun, you’re doing it right,” says Button, adding that the course is labelled for pars suitable for families and kids, as well as seasoned pros.

Discussions about introducing a disc golf course to town began a year ago, when Coun. Dave Auld made a motion to begin exploring feasible locations.
Since it began, however, the project suffered a setback.
Back in May, negotiations with Wild Rose School Division (WRSD) to have half the course set up on school land hit a snag, forcing the town to forge ahead with a scaled back plan for a nine-hole course.
However, in an interview with 94.5 Rewind Radio, WRSD Superintendent Jodie Mattia indicated that discussions regarding the scope of the course are ongoing.
Button adds, while it is a nine-hole course for now, council remains hopeful that one day it can be expanded north or west to accommodate 18 holes.
Before you play the course, folks are invited to download the disc golf app UDisc which helps players track scores, view amenities and leaderboards, and find courses — including Rocky’s new course.
QR codes are displayed along the course for players to download the app too.
A grand opening celebration is set for early October.
