The Rocky Jr. Rebels peewee football team is headed to the league championship game following a 59-12 victory against the Drumheller Terrapins on Oct. 25.
The team will host the league championship in Rocky Nov 1. vs. Red Deer Minor Football Servus Bucks.
“We felt really good about the game, considering we did lose to Drumheller earlier in the season” says head coach Mike Cochran. “We prepped very well, and the team was hungry to get that victory.”
Around halftime, the Rebels squad found out that Red Deer had beaten Sylvan Lake in the other qualifier, meaning a Rebels victory would secure home field advantage for the championship. “We wanted it — badly,” said Cochran.
He adds, the team will practice hard this week, noting that the team is evenly matched with the Red Deer Squad — including a 30-30 tie in the regular season opener.
The final will take place Saturday Nov. 1 at Curtis Field in Rocky Mountain House.
Team photographer Serina Taylor says fans should show up early to the field for a fun afternoon.
Before the game, she says fans can enjoy a food truck, a live DJ and announcer, and smoke bombs to add to the experience.
Kickoff is at 4:30 p.m. Saturday Nov. 1 at Curtis Field.
BANTAMS
The Rocky Jr. Rebels bantam team will complete in the B pool final in Ponoka on Nov. 1 in Ponoka.
Head coach Curtis Nichol says they’ll be taking on the Ponoka Broncs.
He adds, it was a tough start to the season with some tough losses, injuries, and a smaller roster than other years.
Despite challenges, the team battled through many close games throughout the regular season, including a key Oct. 25 victory against Olds which secured a spot in the B pool gold medal game.
Kickoff is 1 p.m.
ATOMS
Meantime, the Rocky Jr. Rebels Atoms season came to an end as the team wrapped up seven weeks of competition with a jamboree-style final in Lacombe Oct. 25.
Parents are extending a thank-you to coaches whose guidance and passion helped shape the young athletes into champions. They also thank the volunteers who braved the early mornings and cold sidelines to contribute to a successful season.
